Some reading weeks call for velocity. Others call for a book that slows the room down a little and gives you space to listen.
I’ve been craving more of the second kind lately. Books that are not inert, not sleepy, just deliberate. They take a breath before making their point and trust the reader to stay with them.
A thoughtful novel or memoir can do something noisy books rarely manage. It can change the tempo of your own thinking for a few hours. That alone feels valuable right now.
So here’s my simple recommendation for the week: don’t overlook the quieter book on the stack. Sometimes that’s the one with the longest afterlife.
